Quick answer
To get cited by ChatGPT, let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site, make sure your pages are indexed in Bing, and write passages that answer one question directly in the first sentences with specific facts. Then earn mentions on sites ChatGPT already cites, and track visits that arrive with utm_source=chatgpt.com.
ChatGPT cites sources whenever it searches the web, and those citations are links people click. Being one of the three or four sources behind an answer is the AI-search equivalent of ranking on page one. Unlike page one, there is no position report to tell you where you stand, and the rules are less documented.
What is documented, and what consistently shows up in the pages ChatGPT cites, is enough to act on. This guide covers the nine changes that make the biggest difference and how to measure them. It is part of the AI search readiness checker guide.
How to get cited by ChatGPT: how sources are chosen
When ChatGPT decides a question needs current information, it runs a web search, reads a handful of results and writes an answer with citations to the passages it used. Three things feed that process.
OpenAI's own index, built by OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI's documentation says sites that block OAI-SearchBot won't be shown in ChatGPT's search answers.
Third-party search providers. When OpenAI launched ChatGPT search in October 2024 it said results come partly from third-party search providers, and Microsoft Bing has been the main one. A page that isn't in Bing's index is at a disadvantage.
Live fetches. When a user pastes a URL or asks about a specific page, ChatGPT-User fetches it on demand.
Then the model chooses passages. It favours text that answers the question directly, is specific enough to quote, and comes from a source that looks credible for the topic. That last part explains why the same few sites are cited again and again for a subject: they are well known, often mentioned elsewhere, and their pages answer questions plainly.
Insight: ChatGPT cites passages, not pages. A 3,000-word guide gets cited for the one paragraph that answers the question cleanly. Write every section as if it might be lifted out alone.
9 changes that make ChatGPT more likely to cite you
- Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and in your CDN or firewall, and allow ChatGPT-User so links users share can be fetched.
- Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit the sitemap, and use IndexNow if your platform supports it, so new pages reach Bing quickly.
- Put the answer in the first one to three sentences under each heading, naming the subject instead of writing "it" or "this".
- Use specific facts: numbers, prices, dates, limits and names, so a passage is worth quoting over a vaguer competitor.
- Structure comparisons as tables and processes as numbered steps, which models extract cleanly.
- Server-render the content so the text is in the HTML, since OpenAI's crawlers don't execute JavaScript reliably.
- State who you are: Organization schema with
sameAslinks on the homepage, a clear About page, and author and date on articles. - Earn mentions on sites ChatGPT already cites for your topic, such as industry publications, review sites, comparison articles and active community threads.
- Keep key pages current with a visible updated date and
dateModifiedin the JSON-LD, because ChatGPT often prefers recent sources for fast-moving topics.
Changes 1, 2 and 6 decide whether you can be cited at all. Changes 3 to 5 decide whether your passage is chosen. Changes 7 to 9 decide whether you're trusted over a better-known site.

Run a free auditBefore and after: an answer-first rewrite
Most pages that never get cited have the answer in them; it's just buried. Here is a typical opening and the rewrite.
Before:
In today's competitive landscape, understanding the costs involved in
professional services is more important than ever. Many factors come into
play, and every business is different. In this post, we'll explore what
goes into pricing so you can make an informed decision.
After:
An SEO audit costs $500 to $2,500 for a small business site of about 100
pages when done by a freelancer, and $2,500 to $7,500 for a mid-size site
from an agency. The price depends mostly on the number of URLs, JavaScript
rendering, international setup and how much written analysis you need.
The rewrite names the subject, gives the numbers and the main variables in two sentences, and makes sense if quoted with no context. Nothing in the original could be quoted at all.
Apply the same test to every H2 section: read the first two sentences alone. If they don't answer the heading's question, rewrite them.
How AI answer engines differ
ChatGPT is one of several AI answer engines, and they don't work identically. A page ready for one is mostly ready for all, but the access rules differ.
| Engine | Where results come from | Crawler to allow | How to measure | Seotific's role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT search | OpenAI index plus third-party providers (mainly Bing) | OAI-SearchBot; ChatGPT-User for live fetches | Referrals tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com | Checks OAI-SearchBot access per URL |
| Claude | Anthropic's search plus live fetches | Claude-SearchBot; Claude-User | Referrals from claude.ai | Checks Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User |
| Perplexity | Perplexity's own index plus live fetches | PerplexityBot | Referrals from perplexity.ai | Checks PerplexityBot |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google's normal index | Googlebot (Google-Extended doesn't apply) | Search Console generative AI report | Full on-page audit for Google |
The table explains a common surprise: a site that ranks well on Google can still be absent from ChatGPT if it blocks OAI-SearchBot or isn't well indexed in Bing. Check access first with the AI crawler access checker, and see GPTBot robots.txt for the exact OpenAI rules.
Getting mentioned where ChatGPT already looks
For competitive topics, being cited often depends on being mentioned by sources that are already cited. Ask ChatGPT five questions your customers ask and note which sites it cites. Those are your targets.
- "Best X" and comparison articles. If ChatGPT cites a "best invoicing tools for freelancers" roundup, getting included in that roundup puts you in the answer indirectly and sometimes directly.
- Community threads. Reddit and specialist forums are cited often for experience-based questions. Contribute genuinely useful answers under your own name; promotional posts get removed and help nobody.
- Industry publications and data. Original data (a survey, a benchmark, a pricing analysis) gets cited and linked by others, which compounds.
- Review and directory sites for software and local businesses, where ChatGPT looks for third-party opinions.
This is ordinary digital PR, aimed at the sources the AI uses rather than at a link count.
Common mistakes that keep pages out of ChatGPT
Blocking OAI-SearchBot by accident. Wrong: a "block AI bots" robots.txt template that lists every OpenAI user agent, added to stop training. Right: block GPTBot if you want, and allow OAI-SearchBot explicitly in its own group.
Ignoring Bing. Wrong: years of Google Search Console attention and no Bing Webmaster Tools account. Right: verify the site in Bing, submit the sitemap, and check that your important pages are indexed there.
Hiding the answer below an introduction. Wrong: three paragraphs of context before the first useful sentence. Right: the answer first, the context after, so the opening passage is quotable on its own.
Writing for keywords instead of questions. Wrong: a page optimised for "best project management software" that never says which tool suits which team. Right: sections that answer the specific questions people ask, such as which tool for a five-person agency and what it costs per seat.
Treating ChatGPT as a ranking report. Wrong: checking one query once and drawing conclusions. Right: tracking ten representative questions monthly, because citations vary between runs and over time.
Tools for tracking ChatGPT citations
Manual checks. Ask ChatGPT (with search on) the ten questions your pages answer, monthly, and record whether and where you are cited. It is crude but reliable.
Analytics. ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to many outbound links, so GA4 and other analytics tools can segment the traffic. Watch the landing pages it arrives on; they are the pages being cited.
Bing Webmaster Tools for Bing indexing and, where available, AI performance data. Search Console's generative AI report for Google's AI features, which often cite similar pages.
Seotific checks the parts you control on every audited page: OAI-SearchBot and other AI crawler access, whether the title, H1 and main text are in the raw HTML, whether the opening answers the question, whether lists and tables are used, and whether Organization details are present. For the structured data side, see schema markup for AI search.
Frequently asked questions
How does ChatGPT decide which websites to cite?
When ChatGPT searches, it draws on OpenAI's own index (built by OAI-SearchBot) and third-party search providers, then cites the passages that answer the question most directly and credibly. Pages need to be crawlable by OAI-SearchBot, indexed, and written so individual passages answer specific questions.
Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing?
OpenAI said at launch that ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers alongside its own technology, and Microsoft Bing has been the main provider. Being well indexed in Bing helps, so verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap there.
Do I need to allow GPTBot to be cited by ChatGPT?
No. GPTBot collects training data. Citations in ChatGPT search depend on OAI-SearchBot, which you can allow while still blocking GPTBot. Many publishers do exactly that to stay visible without contributing to training.
How long does it take to start getting cited by ChatGPT?
Access changes take effect in about a day, according to OpenAI. Being cited depends on the content and on how the page competes with other sources, so it can take weeks. Pages that are already indexed in Bing and answer questions directly tend to appear soonest.
Can I pay to be cited by ChatGPT?
No. ChatGPT's citations are not sold, and you can't buy placement in its answers. Be wary of services promising guaranteed citations. What works is crawler access, clear answer-first content, and mentions on sources ChatGPT already trusts.
How do I know if ChatGPT is sending me traffic?
Look in your analytics for referrals from chatgpt.com, often tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com. Check which landing pages receive that traffic to see which content is being cited, and ask ChatGPT relevant questions yourself to see the citations in context.
