Multiple H1 Tags: Is It Bad for SEO?

Published 2026-10-05 ยท Seotific Team

"Multiple H1 tags found" is a staple warning in site audits. Is it hurting you? Usually not directly โ€” but it is often a symptom of a messy template worth fixing.

What Google says

HTML5 permits more than one H1 and Google's representatives have repeatedly said that multiple H1s do not cause a penalty. Google's systems are good at working out a page's topic from the whole document.

Why one H1 is still the best default

Where extra H1s come from

Typically a theme: the logo is wrapped in an H1 on every page, a hero slider outputs an H1 per slide, or a "related posts" widget uses H1s. These are the cases worth fixing because they dilute the real heading and repeat the same H1 sitewide.

How to fix

  1. View the page source and search for <h1.
  2. Keep the one that describes the page; demote the rest to H2/H3 or plain styled text.
  3. Make sure the logo is not an H1 on inner pages.
  4. Re-check after changes โ€” sliders and widgets often reintroduce them.

In Seotific, multiple H1s are a low-severity notice, while a missing H1 is rated high โ€” because that's the one that actually costs you.
